What you are actually paying for
Hosting is cheap and getting cheaper. What is not cheap is somebody noticing that your site has been down since Saturday, or that the backups stopped running in March, or that the certificate expires on Friday.
Managed hosting is the difference between renting space on a server and having the server looked after. Uptime monitored continuously. Backups taken daily, stored off site, and restored occasionally to prove they work — an untested backup is a hope rather than a plan.
The server runs nginx with caching and compression configured properly, which is most of the difference between a site that loads in one second and the same site loading in four on a shared host.
You also get a staging environment — a private copy of the site where changes can be tested before anybody sees them. Testing on the live site is how a Tuesday afternoon becomes an incident.
What this does not include
This is the server, not the software on it. Plugin and theme updates, performance work and changes to the site are support and maintenance, which is a separate service.
Plenty of clients take both, and it is usually simpler. But you can host with us and manage the site yourself, or have us maintain a site hosted elsewhere. They are separate because they genuinely are separate jobs.
The problem with cheap hosting is not the hosting. It is that nobody notices when something goes wrong.
